Novartis AG plans to combine its newer heart pill Tektuma with Diovan and says that it expects to bring the new therapy to market prior to the expiration of the patent for Diovan in 2012. Switzerland-based Novartis also indicates that Afinitor, a cancer therapy, may reach the market early next year.

The company also points out that an FDA panel recently reported that Coartem, its malaria medication, is safe and effective at treating the mosquito-borne illness. Coartem is already approved in over 80 countries.
